New to Pig War Pipes & Drums — Canadian Music!
To better represent our unit’s present and future membership, we are in the process of adding the following Canadian military and patriotic music to our repertoire. The planned collection consists of:
- Farewell to Nova Scotia – A popular folk song from Nova Scotia, Canada, adapted from the Scottish lament “The Soldier’s Adieu” written by Robert Tannahill sometime before or during World War I and popularized in 1964.
- God Save the Queen (AKA “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee“) – The national or royal anthem in most Commonwealth realms, including Canada since 1980.
- O Canada – The national anthem of Canada.
- Sloedam – This tune commemorates The Battle of Walcheren Causeway during WWII in the Netherlands, which the Calgary Highlanders 42nd Expeditionary Force participated in.
- The Maple Leaf Forever – A Canadian song written by Alexander Muir (1830–1906) in 1867, the year of Canada‘s Confederation.
Additionally, Pipe Major Don Scoby has arranged a version of Price of a Pig to serve as the Pig War unit tune. Price of a Pig is intended to be coupled with Sloedam as an additional performance number.
